Friends of Medium and Reading Enjoyment

Before I begin, let me say I am not yet a friend of Medium. It isn’t for lack of want. I think that the program is a wonderful idea. I simply hope that it is used in a way that benefits not only the writers but the readers alike.

Last week Medium rolled out the Friends of Medium program. Those of us who have been there basically have the gist of what the membership entails. I’m not going to rehash that. There are plenty of beautiful writers who have done a wonderful job of explaining. If you’re unclear, I would visit one of them for clarification.

The point here is what I’m hoping comes from Friends of Medium.

I hope that this won’t create a problem with people reading the things they want to read. Those who have the Friends badge still give their time to subjects that they love. They read articles they want to learn more about. That these readers focus on what makes them creatively happy by way of reading.

Reading is our best avenue to strengthen our own writing. Being aware of the people around you and the subjects that you enjoy is a huge benefit.

While many may believe that reading people’s articles is a waste of time, this isn’t the case at all. As you read you get to know others. You see little bits of their personality. You grow right alongside them.

My favorite thing about Medium has always been that it is a melting pot of creativity. There are hundreds of individuals expressing themselves and using this as their creative outlet. I love being able to get these glimpses into others’ success stories. Hearing about the pasts that they’re working through. Having a view of their creativity that fuels them and pushes them forward into their different goals and aspirations.

One of these days, when income permits, I fully intend on joining the program and having that Friends of Medium badge. I love the idea of putting forward the contribution and time to other creatives. Unfortunately, I’m still trying to find my way through a rough patch with employment and finding my next writing endeavor.

But overall, that is my hope for this program. I want to see everyone out there enjoying the things they love. I want to be able to see those in-depth comments when you view stories that make you stop and think for a moment.

Build your content and read what you enjoy. Medium is a place that gives you the opportunity, not many other places do. Keep pushing forward and getting your words and thoughts out there. But please, if you come across an article written by someone who is not yet a Friend of Medium, remember that they too are doing their best to be creative and pursue putting their words and thoughts out there and it’s also important.
